Wisconsin Statutes and DATCP rules require that any person operating an animal market have an annual animal market license from the department. A separate license is required for each animal market location. An animal market is any premises that are open to the public for the purpose of buying or selling livestock or wild animals and that have facilities to keep, feed and water livestock or wild animals prior to sale. Some exceptions apply.
This license may be obtained by submitting a completed application and appropriate fees to DATCP.
Note: A Class B animal market license is required for markets conducting four or fewer auction days (unlimited sale days) per license year. No wild animal sales or auctions may be conducted at a Class B market.
An annual animal market license expires on June 30 and is not transferable. The non-refundable annual fee for a Class B animal market license is $220.
- Markets with livestock or wild animals, conducting more than four auction days (unlimited sales days) per license year need to apply for a Class A license.
- Equine markets need to apply for a Class E license.
An applicant must also submit an annual registration application for each animal transport vehicle that the person operates. The non-refundable annual fee is $20 for each vehicle registration. Two registration stickers will be provided, one for each side of the transport vehicle.
Note: Vehicles only need to be registered once annually. If you have already registered the vehicles on another license, you do not need to register them again.
