Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection

Wisconsin Statutes and DATCP rules require that any person operating an animal market have an annual animal market license from the department. A separate license is required for each animal market location. An animal market is any premises that are open to the public for the purpose of buying or selling livestock or wild animals and that have facilities to keep, feed and water livestock or wild animals prior to sale. Some exceptions apply.

• Markets with livestock or wild animals, conducting more than four auction days (unlimited sales days) per license year need to apply for a Class A license.
• Markets with livestock only, conducting four or fewer auction days (unlimited sales days) per license year need to apply for a Class B license.
• Equine markets need to apply for a Class E license.
